Alipay and WeChat Pay in China: prepare, check and keep a backup

Separate registration, identity checks, eligible card linking and actual merchant payments without sharing card details here.

The short answer

Visitors can use eligible international cards with supported Chinese payment services, alongside bank cards and RMB cash. Set up through the official app and follow its current verification prompts. A linked card is a preparation step, not proof that every transaction or personal transfer is supported.

Prepare one primary method and a backup

  • Install the official Alipay or WeChat app from a trusted store. Keep the account phone number and bank verification available during the trip.
  • Check the exact card with the app and issuer: supported network, overseas/online transaction setting, verification method, exchange and issuer fees. Brand logos alone do not guarantee your card.
  • Keep a second method that does not depend entirely on the same locked account or phone. Prepare manageable RMB cash and confirm a suitable ATM or exchange option.

Check the issuing country as well as the card network

Choose your actual card’s issuing country and network in the helper; the page language does not set them. If either is unknown, keep card readiness unverified until the issuer and wallet confirm the exact card.

  • Visa’s 2022-03-05 notice states that Russian-issued Visa cards cease working abroad after its suspension; Mastercard’s notice says cards issued by Russian banks are unsupported by its network. Both announcements were readable when checked on 2026-10-04; this is not a 2026 card or wallet transaction test.
  • A different issuing country, UnionPay or Mir is not automatic proof of usability. Confirm issuer restrictions, wallet support, verification and the intended merchant payment, then prepare a usable independent backup. Linking a card alone does not establish payment success.

Set up inside the official app

  • Register or sign in with your own number. Open the app’s card or wallet area and add an eligible card. Menu names can differ by app version and account region.
  • Complete the identity and bank checks the app requests, directly there. Never send card numbers, security codes, PINs or passport images to this planner or a person claiming to help.
  • Read the payment confirmation screen for the amount, selected funding source and actual fee. Promotional waivers have conditions and expiry dates.

Diagnose the failure you actually see

  • No verification text: confirm the receiving number and carrier settings, then use the app’s authorised support or alternate verification. A data-only eSIM does not itself fix SMS.
  • Card rejected: check card eligibility and issuer restrictions. Do not repeatedly add different private information or open duplicate accounts to bypass a restriction.
  • Linked card but purchase fails: read the specific merchant/payment error, ask the app and issuer, then use a valid alternate method. Personal transfers and merchant purchases can have different rules.

What counts as prepared

You can access your account, complete the required checks, receive needed verification and explain your backup. Our helper does not bind a card, make a payment or test a real purchase. A payment attempt abroad is not necessarily a test of a mainland merchant payment.

Common questions

Are all payments fee-free?

No. Platform rules, eligible promotions, exchange rates and issuer charges can differ. Read the current confirmation rather than an old blanket percentage or waiver claim.

Do I need both apps?

No universal rule applies. Choose a usable primary method and a practical backup; installing a second app is useful only if you can actually access and prepare it.
