The short answer
A travel eSIM can be convenient for an unlocked compatible phone, but a data plan may not supply a local number, calls or verification texts. A local SIM, home-carrier roaming and Wi-Fi serve different needs. Compare the actual plan conditions for every day and region of your trip.
Choose the mode before the brand
- Travel eSIM: check the exact device and purchase market, carrier lock, destination coverage and whether the plan is data-only. A model family name alone is insufficient.
- Local physical SIM: ask an official operator shop about document requirements, local number, included calls/SMS, top-ups and cancellation. Do not assume every airport counter offers the same plan.
- Home roaming: check the operator travel pass, eligible networks, daily charging trigger, incoming-call/text costs and any fair-use rule.
- Wi-Fi: useful as a backup where available, but access, login and privacy conditions vary. It is not a continuous mobile connection or an SMS service.

Make a comparable basket
- Enter trip days, visited regions, data estimate, number/SMS needs, hotspot needs and a budget currency. The selector should exclude known incompatibility and keep unknown support visible.
- Read when validity starts: installation, activation or first supported-network connection are different triggers. An early start can leave the final days uncovered.
- Compare total coverage cost, not a short pack divided by a longer trip. Different currencies or conditional discounts should not be sorted as one numeric cheapest list.
Check the difficult terms
For “unlimited”, identify high-speed allowance and subsequent speed/FUP limits. Check hotspot allowance, recharge options, taxes, refund eligibility and support access. A blank field means unknown, not supported.
- Save your selected plan and its check date. Reopen the official detail before purchasing: a saved comparison is a dated record, not a price reservation.

No matching plan
Relax optional data or price preferences only if acceptable; do not relax a required device, region or SMS condition silently. If eSIM compatibility is unresolved, compare the existing carrier’s roaming and a confirmed local-SIM option, with Wi-Fi for initial setup.
Common questions
Which eSIM is the best for China?
There is no universal winner. The right choice covers your exact phone, regions, duration and communication needs at a clear total cost. Supplier coverage claims are not our field test.
Does mobile data let me receive bank SMS?
No. SMS usually belongs to the relevant phone line, not a separate data-only plan. Confirm that line’s roaming and text reception with your carrier and bank.
