The short answer
Choose the area that supports the days you want to spend there. Old-town activities, a west-shore stay and Shuanglang on the northeast shore are different bases. A lake view does not establish quietness, road access, room quality or a short trip to every attraction.
Compare the bases, not a city label
- Old-town area: start here if your priority is repeated visits to the old-town streets and activities. Ask the actual property about the gate, drop-off, stairs and night noise; an old-town address alone does not settle them.
- Caicun and the west lakeside: candidates when lakeside time matters. Check the real path to the water, vehicle access and how you will reach activities away from the lake.
- Xizhou: another west-side candidate if you want the stay to revolve around that town and nearby places. Do not book it solely as a substitute for an old-town itinerary.
- Shuanglang: a distinct northeast-shore base. Make the connection to your planned west-side activities explicit rather than treating all “Erhai” listings as adjacent.

Shuanglang is on the northeast shore. Historic fares, cruise times and promotional superlatives are excluded.
Make an area decision in four steps
- List the two activities you most want to repeat, your actual arrival/departure station or airport and the number of usable days after transfers.
- Compare a single base with changing accommodation. Count packing, checkout, reaching the next property and its check-in window as travel work.
- For children, wheeled luggage or limited mobility, ask for the exact drop-off and step-free route before choosing an attractive photo.
- Save one preferred base, one trade-off and the questions you still need answered. Leave unknown room conditions pending.
A useful room enquiry
Ask for the complete Chinese address, recent photos of the booked room, registration process, lift/stairs, heating/cooling, bathroom, bed arrangement, late-arrival contact and cancellation terms. Ask the host to distinguish property features from services that need separate arrangement.
When a recommendation would be unreliable
If the arrival point, transport method or essential access requirement is unresolved, do not rank a base as “best”. Our public-area guide is not a local inspection of a room or a live vehicle schedule. Resolve those facts with the real provider, or keep a less complex single-base plan.
Common questions
Is a lakeside stay always quieter?
No. Ask about the exact room, surrounding roads, businesses and current noise. A geographic category is not a noise measurement.
Can I use the Dali city name to choose an arrival address?
No. Match the exact ticketed arrival point and the actual accommodation address, then confirm the last leg with the host.
