The short answer
Start with your fixed arrival and departure, choose a small number of bases, then verify each leg. Kunming and Dali can form a focused planning outline. Adding another region is a separate transport, weather and access decision, not a free extra stop on a list.
A practical route sheet
- For each move write: stay checkout, exact departure station/airport, actual service and date, arrival point, last-mile route, next check-in and a missed-connection fallback.
- Use Chinese station names beside English labels. Read Kunming and Kunming South separately, and check your real Dali arrival point rather than assuming the train arrives at the old-town gate.
- Find the current service through 12306 or the actual carrier. A route outline here does not supply seats, live schedules or a booking.

Official passenger rules. The page contains older and newer passages; do not use stale child-ticket or schedule statements.

Three choices of scope
- Focused short trip: stay in the arrival region or compare Kunming and Dali with limited moves. Preserve a departure buffer; leave optional places off when transport is unresolved.
- Slower two-base trip: use several consecutive nights in each base, with optional nearby outings that return to the same stay. Confirm those outings rather than inventing a daily transfer.
- Wider trip: add one chosen region only after checking its independent transport and climate. Northwest plateau areas and the province’s tropical south should not share one weather or accessibility assumption.

Use buffers for real work
Travel-day effort includes packing, security, waiting, station exits, food and check-in. With children, mobility needs or late arrivals, reduce optional activity first. Choose the buffer against your actual carrier conditions; this page does not certify a minimum safe connection time.
When not to add another base
Do not add it when the essential connection, lodging reception or individual health/access requirement cannot be confirmed. Keep a cancellable planning alternative where available, check current terms and revise the outline if an actual leg disappears.
Common questions
Are these locally tested tours?
No. They are editorial planning structures based on public sources. Specific services, properties and the full route have not been inspected or booked by this site.
Must I hire a driver to visit Yunnan?
No. Compare actual rail, lawful public/local transport and any separately confirmed service for your route and needs. Existing partner resources do not make a driver necessary or available.
