Best time to visit China and Yunnan: compare regions and months

A starting point for Kunming and Yunnan

Kunming’s historical climate description separates a broadly May–October rainy season from a drier November–April period. This is not a promise that every day is wet or dry. Yunnan’s terrain produces large regional differences, so do not apply Kunming to Shangri-La or the tropical south.

Compare your priorities

• Less rain: compare the drier-season tendency, but keep a rain fallback. The beginning and end of a rainy season vary by place and year.
• Comfortable outdoor time: check expected daytime and evening conditions for each region and the actual elevation/activity, rather than using a country-wide average.
• Fewer busy travel days: check the actual holiday calendar for your year, school breaks where relevant and ticket availability. A holiday flag indicates a planning issue, not a measured crowd score.
• Photography or a particular event: ask the local venue/operator about access and event dates. A seasonal picture cannot guarantee the scene on your chosen day.

Use outlooks at the right scale

The 2026 autumn outlook and October risk outlook identify regional differences and continued rainfall possibilities. They are dated regional forecasts, not a forecast for a particular walk or road. Replace them with the current local warning when making a near-term decision.

Turn the month choice into preparation

• Save the destination/month comparison, a clothing and rain plan and an indoor or shorter-day alternative. Recheck forecast, venue and transport conditions before leaving.
