China trains and 12306: check names, stations and the issued ticket

Prepare passenger information safely, distinguish Kunming from Kunming South and leave time for the complete transfer.

The short answer

Use the exact station and travel document shown by the official booking process, then check that the ticket was actually issued. Kunming and Kunming South are different stations. The train’s advertised journey time does not include getting to the station, security, boarding or the final trip to your stay.

Prepare the passenger entry

The official English registration form currently uses foreign passports. Enter real identity only in the official service or your chosen authorised booking provider, never in this helper.
Read the live passport-information rule beside the name field. Match the document and its surname/given-name labels; do not improvise a nickname or apply another platform’s field order.
For a single name, multiple surnames, unusual punctuation or a mismatch, ask 12306 how the particular field should be handled. Our spelling preview cannot certify document identity.

Check an order before and after payment

Before purchase: date, departure station in Chinese, arrival station, train number, passenger/document type, seat class, luggage rules and change/refund conditions.
After purchase: look for issued status and the official order details. A held seat, payment prompt or booking request is a different state.
Preserve the date, train, stations and booking reference separately from a passport image. A reimbursement receipt or itinerary printout is not the travel document.

Kunming station check

昆明站 = Kunming Railway Station. 昆明南站 = Kunming South Railway Station, sometimes labelled Kunmingnan. They are separate locations. Use the station on your issued ticket, and confirm the correct entrance and onward connection rather than selecting “Kunming” as a city.

If the booking or transfer fails

Identity verification pending: follow 12306’s current support or station-counter instructions and bring the original required document. Do not count the trip as booked while the status is unresolved.
No seats or a missed train: inspect actual alternatives and current change/refund rules. An old guide cannot establish today’s availability or a free change.
Different-station transfer: allow for the whole connection and check official transport for your date. We do not reuse historic shuttle counts or promise minutes.

Common questions

Can I board with the planner’s station checklist?

No. It is a preparation record. Boarding requires the actual ticket conditions and required original identity document.

Must all fast trains use Kunming South?

Do not infer the station from the train category. Check the exact station in the actual service and issued ticket.
